"to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ."
Ephesians 4:12-13

Youth Celebrate Seder Meal
March 27, 2010
On Palm Saturday the Diocese hosted the Second Annual Diocesan “World Youth Day” with a special celebration of the Jewish Seder (Passover) with Bishop Albert Thévenot presiding. This was opened to all priests, parish youth leaders, youth from the parishes, WYD pilgrims, and any interested adult. We were more tthan ninety participants.
The Passover Seder is a Jewish ritual feast that marks the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Passover. We were made aware of the importance of the ritual being performed by multiple generations of a family.
The Seder involved a retelling of the story of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt and calls the participants to experience and share in the story as their own story. The program included unleavened bread and bitter herbs, as well as the reading of scripture, singing and other activities, and most importantly, questions designed to keep even the youngest of children interested. It was an occasion for praise and thanksgiving for our Jewish roots.
So much of our Catholic Christian faith is rooted in Judaism. Celebrating the Seder can really give us more appreciation for Jesus, what Jesus did and what He experienced, and for our own traditions and beliefs. As described in the New Testament, Jesus’ Last Supper, in the days prior to his crucifixion and resurrection, was a Passover meal.
The Seder was a transition to the Mass. We then proceeded to celebrate Mass as we have it today, understanding better why we do things in the mass as Christians. It was truly a fascinating learning experience.
One young lady said that the Passover Seder can be "a great way to prepare us to celebrate the Easter season."
I personally was greatly touched by the spontaneity and seriousness of the young people to help out and to participate. It gives me so much hope. They are doing their share in extending the Kingdom of God in our Church today and they are doing it beautifully.
