Diocesan Children's Catechetics

July 2009

Hi, my name is Christine Taylor and I am the Diocesan Children’s Catechist Coordinator for the Diocese of Prince Albert.  I convocated with a Master of Divinity from Newman Theological College in Edmonton in the fall of 2008.  I am very thrilled to be working in the area of children’s catechetics because as a mom I believe that the most important gift I can hand on to my daughter is my faith, as my mom handed hers on to me.  Everything else flows from this gift of faith.

The mission statement and goals of the DCCC Office can be found on this web page also.  If anyone has any questions or concerns or would like to contact me please do not hesitate to call (306-922-4747)
or email (cat.cecr@sasktel.net).

Leaving nothing undared for the Kingdom,
Christine

Mission Statement:

To support families in the faith formation of their children, by providing within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Prince Albert, an excellent parish/school catechetical and sacramental preparation programs and providing training for the parish/school catechists to deliver the selected programs.

Scriptural Vision:
Jesus on the Road to Emmaus: Luke 24.13-35

Why this Scripture?:

  • The greatest struggle of the DCCC is the attrition of children from catechesis classes after completing their reception of the Sacraments of Initiation.
  • The problem is not the children as much as it is the parents, who feel that once the Sacraments of Initiation are received the faith education is complete.
  • The parents do not come to church on a regular basis because the service does not speak to their hearts – they have not been evangelized themselves.
  • We need to walk with families where they are at, sharing with them who Jesus is and what he means for our lives. In this way they too will be able to say, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us?’

Ongoing ministry goals of the DCCC Office:

  • Continue to support, nurture, and train catechists – through spring and fall visits to catechetical coordinators in the parish, the newsletter (ten months a year), through spring and fall diocesan catechist gatherings, deanery training of catechists, etc.
  • Promote the programs chosen by the Diocese for the teaching of catechesis and sacramental preparation
  • Keep in contact with provincial (ACRES) and western coordinators of religious education (WCCRE) – continue to be knowledgeable about the direction of the National Office of Religious Education (NORE)
  • Continue to work with the other Pastoral Team to offer intergenerational catechetical events

Next year’s additional goal of the DCCC Office:

  • To form a catechesis commission
  • With this commission, through a social analysis of the present realities of catechesis in our diocese develop an action plan
  • Implementation of the action plan
  • End of year evaluate how things unfolded and set the action plan for next year

Key words that describe the focus of this mission:
Christocentric, enthuse, evangelize
